The copper lids of our first scented candle edition are made from copper in Berlin. Copper is a metal that is primarily mined from ores and is known for its shiny red-brown color. Over time, copper oxidizes to a darker, brownish protective layer and the material loses its luster. The patina development is a natural process and sometimes even desired, because it seals the surface and thus protects the copper underneath.

You can prevent the development of patina by spraying the copper lid with Zapon varnish, for example. Out of consideration for our environment, we have not treated our lids in this way.

How can you clean your copper lid if you don't like the patina?

The easiest way to do this is with a simple vinegar and some salt. Put some vinegar and some salt in a container, stir a few times with a spoon and put the lid in there for a couple of hours. You can then wipe it off with a damp cloth, pat dry and it should shine as usual again.

If you don't want to put the lid in, you can make a cleaning paste instead, by adding some flour to the vinegar and salt as a binder. If the paste is not thick enough when you first add flour, you can gradually add a little more. Now you can apply the paste with a brush and leave it on for several hours (up to 24) and then wipe off with a damp cloth. The copper now shines again in its old splendor.
